Placencia, Belize, is one of the most laid back, prettiest and most interesting places in the Caribbean. This tranquil village is on the tip of a long sandy peninsula in south eastern Belize is an affordable, uncrowded fun little gem of a tropical paradise.
With sixteen miles of sandy beaches, the stunning blue Caribbean ocean on one side, a mangrove filled lagoon full life on the other, Placencia is truly very special. And just offshore are myriad cayes, dotting Belize’s Barrier Reef. Placencia is still relatively untouched, and is a place where people live, rather than a place where people visit. Everyone seems to know each other, and the main thoroughfare, a 4,071 foot long by 4 foot wide footpath recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the narrowest main street in the world, is usually alive with conversation and laughter.
We got there late in the evening with not much sun left in the sky. We were greeted by a longtime family friend and headed to their bed and breakfast, after a hot shower and change we headed out to explore what wonders Placencia has to offer, as we walk out into the warm Caribbean night we were taken back by the true raw beauty of this place. Under the light of a full moon we heard the distant sound of music playing and decided that would be the first place we would visit, as we walked down the incredibly long sidewalk that is somehow a road lol, we finally found the magical place that had been calling us. A brightly colored open air bar on the beach with a party in full swing people dancing and drinking to the harmonious sound of a two man band playing steel drums and singing, I knew that we had just hit jackpot. 6 Belikin beers and a few coke and rums down I found myself having the time of my life.
There is nothing and I repeat nothing like a swim in the ocean at dawn with the waves lapping on the empty beach, coconut tress flowing in the warm salty breeze leaves your senses wanting more of the peace and tranquility that only a place like this can provide. As I am walk out the warm turquoise colored water the smell of fried dough and salty fish hits my nose, a smell that I instantly recognize from many belizian breakfasts that my dad has cooked over the years; Fried jack with salt fish & ackee.
Placencia is a place if you never been your missing out on it’s a like being on a island without the boat ride, it a place I could build a house on and spend my days looking at the water and reading, I had so much fun that words truly can’t describe it it’s the kinda place that you have to see for yourself.
